SKILLS BUILDING WORKSHOP AND TRAINING OF PEER EDUCATORS ON HIV/AIDS AWARENESS AMONG YOUTHS FROM THE RURAL AREAS AND DISTRICTS OF NEGERI SEMBILAN

Negeri Sembilan Family Planning Association identified that there is a great need for the dissemination of knowledge on Adolescent Sexuality and Reproductive Health Care and awareness on HIV/AIDS/ STD among the youths in the rural area, as youths from rural areas do not have access to information on HIV/AIDS and STD. Thus, NSFPA conducted “Skills Building Workshop and Training of PEER EDUCATORS on HIV/AIDS Awareness Among Youths from The Rural Areas and Districts of Negeri Sembilan”.

The project was successfully carried out on the 25-26 October 2003 in Port Dickson. A total of 80 students (15 years old) who have finished their Lower Secondary assessment (PMR), consisting of boys and girls from semi rural schools from the districts of Port Dickson, Mantin, Rembau and Kuala Pilah attended the workshop. The objectives of this workshop were:
  • to disseminate information to youth on Reproductive Health and the importance of taking care of their health.
  • to impart knowledge on dangers of HIV/AIDS and the preventive measures to curb it.
  • to identify and train a group of youths to be peer educators in their respective schools.
  • to enable youths to interact with one another and exchange ideas and opinions on issues pertaining to HIV/AIDS and its preventions.
Activities such as discussions, presentations, drama, role-playing, talks, quiz and games were carried out during the workshop. Participants were well disciplined and eager to participate in the activities planned. When participants were interviewed at the end of the session, they commented that the contents of the workshop were of immense benefit to them and had enlightened them. They were very positive about replicating some of the activities in the workshop when they are back in schools for the benefit of their peers.
